Gujarat wicketkeeper and left-handed batsman Parthiv Patel will join the Indian squad for the Asia Cup T20 in Bangladesh as a back-up after Indian limited-overs team captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni suffered a muscle spasm in the back during a training session today in Dhaka, the BCCI announced.

India's first match in the Asia Cup T20 is on February 24 against Bangladesh, and Dhoni is likely to miss the encounter. With no other wicket-keeper in the squad, the BCCI selection committee called in Parthiv Patel as a back-up to the squad.

Parthiv Patel, who captained the Gujarat cricket team to the 2015 Vijay Hazare Trophy title in December, last played for India in 2012 against Sri Lanka in Brisbane. In a not so happy outing, Parthiv made four runs from 7 balls in the match against Sri Lanka at Brisbane, which India lost by 51 runs.

The left-handed wicketkeeper-batsman has been in good form in the domestic tournament and also scored a century against India A in the Deodhar Trophy last month.
