In yet another blow to the Rising Pune Supergiants, Australian captain Steve Smith has been forced to cut short his IPL season after he suffered a wrist injury. Smith is the fourth Pune player to be ruled out of the season following injuries to Kevin Pietersen, Faf du Plessis, and Mitchell Marsh.

"Steve has been struggling with pain in his right wrist for the last week during his stint in the IPL. We have been working with his IPL franchise Pune to monitor this, and unfortunately, it has not resolved. As such, he will return home from India for further assessment and treatment ahead of the tour of the West Indies.

"From the information we have so far, this doesn't appear to be a serious injury but we are keen to give him the time to recover and rehabilitate before heading to the West Indies at the end of May," Australia's sports science and sports medicine manager Alex Kountouris said, reported .

Smith had scored his maiden T20 hundred on Friday against Gujarat Lions, and looked in great touch against defending champions Mumbai Indians on Sunday scoring 45 off 23 balls. The Aussie skipper scored a total of 270 runs in the eight matches for the M S Dhoni-led side, and was the second-highest run scorer for the side behind Ajinkya Rahane.

Smith’s injury will be yet another blow for the struggling Pune side, who have already lost Kevin Pietersen, Faf du Plessis, and Mitchell Marsh to injuries. Rising Pune Supergiants are sixth in the table with two wins from eight matches and will face Delhi Daredevils in their next match on May 5 at the Feroz Shah Kotla stadium in Delhi.
