Australia not in hurry to appoint new coach, says CA chairman David Peever

Cricket Australia chairman David Peever made it clear that the board is not in a hurry to decide the coach, captain and vice-captain. He clarified the board has asked for recommendations, but decisions will be taken after the announcements of the squad for England Tour which will be played in June.

On Friday (April 20), Cricket Australia chairman David Peever has cleared the confusion over making decisions for the new leadership group. He asserted that the board will take the decisions on its due course after finalising the squad for the England series. While both captain Steve Smith and vice-captain David Warner were banned after the infamous ball-tampering saga, coach Darren Lehmann stepped down from his post despite being clean-cheated by Cricket Australia. 

"The board has asked management to provide recommendations regarding candidates for the men's head coach, ODI (one-day international) captain and ODI vice-captain," Peever said in a statement after a board meeting on Friday.

"The board is anticipating receiving these recommendations in the coming weeks, with a view to making appointments ahead of the ODI Tour to the UK. Once these appointments have been endorsed and finalised, announcements can then be made," he added.

This week, media reports claimed that former opening batsman Justin Langer had already been appointed as coach, which forced Cricket Australia to issue a statement denying the reports.

Australia will tour England in June for five one-day internationals and a one-off Twenty20 fixture. Meanwhile, top-order batsman Aaron Finch, who led the Twenty20 side before giving way to Smith to lead in all the three formats in accordance with CA recommendations, has already said he would happily take on the captaincy of the limited overs side if asked.
