At a time when the players have made it a habit to appeal for every possibility of a wicket, it is shocking to see what England did at The Oval today. After a Stuart Broad delivery induced clear sound on the “middle-of-the-bat” of Marnus Labuschagne, none of the English players appealed for a catch.
When it comes to appeals, no one does it quite like Aussies and Englishmen. If building pressure on the umpire is an art, then they are the ultimate Picasso of it. All said and done, what had transpired at The Oval today was enough to take the breath away, and it surely did when the replay was played out in the big screen after the penultimate ball bowled by Stuart Broad’s second over.
Broad landed a back of length delivery down the leg-side and Labuschagne had the option of pulling it. He actually went for it but he was late to react which ultimately resulted in the connection not being established in the way it should.
As the ball made way towards the wicket-keeper, everyone was normal - there was not even a bit of appeal from any of the English players. As the Nottinghamshire man went on to bowl the last ball of the over, the UltraEdge showed that there was a mini spike and had England reviewed, Labuschagne would have been a goner.
