India's Test side is definitely going through a tough time right now. The team has now started to struggle securing wins even in home conditions, which is destroying the home fortress. Amidst this, Ravi Shastri, India's most successful Test coach, has spoken about the team's whitewash.
While India is able to do well in the T20I and ODI formats, the team has not been able to grab wins in the Test series. This has been a concerning factor for the team, along with the former players who have played for the Indian side previously. It all started with India against New Zealand by 0-3 in October 2024.
But when fans thought that the team could get a rebound in its transition phase, the plans failed. The team is now coming up with another whitewash in the home series which now comes against South Africa by 0-2. With the Test team going through a tough phase, it is something which has disappointed India's former Head coach, Ravi Shastri.
Ravi Shastri has been an active part of the commentary panel these days. But there have been just a few occasions when he opened up on India's performance in the Test format lately. Now, India has lost two of its last three home series, and both losses have been with a whitewash. And Shastri with the team's performance in this period.
Ravi Shastri was recently present in a podcast with Prabhat Khabar. He was asked about the recent performances given by the Indian team in the Test format. And by the answers of Shastri, it is clear that he is unhappy with the downfall of the Test team which he took at the top. It should be noted that the teaser of the interview is
, “You tell me. What happened in Guwahati – from 100/1, you skip to 130/7 – this team is not that bad either. They have this much talent at least. The players should take some responsibility too. You have played spin since you started playing cricket.”He criticised the Indian batsmen too for not being able to play spin well, as this has been a probable reason for India's batting struggles.
Following this, the interviewer asked why Shastri is protecting Gautam Gambhir in this case. To this he replied by saying, “I’m not protecting . 100 per cent (he is responsible too). When am I saying anything otherwise? Agar yeh mere saath hota, main pehla responsibility leta (Had this happened with me, I would have been the first one to take responsibility. But then, I wouldn’t have spared the players either in the team meeting).”
Ravi Shastri can be named as India's finest coach in the Test format. Under his leadership, India was able to achieve several records in the Test format. Moreover, it was challenging for the teams to even secure a win if they were playing against India in India. Throughout his coaching tenure, from 2017 to 2019, India suffered just which was against Australia in 2017.
Except for that, India was able to dominate in the Test format with Ravi Shastri as the Head Coach. Fans still remember the iconic duo of Ravi Shastri and Virat Kohli in the Test format, which has helped to break several records for the team. Along with that, Shastri helped India to maintain its top spot in the ICC Test Rankings from 2016 to 2020.
After the Indian team got whitewashed at home for the second time, Gautam Gambhir was present at the press conference. He finally spoke about the loss which has been incurred by the team and who should be given the reason for the same. Gambhir that everyone should be blamed for this loss, starting from him.
He further said, “I’ve said it in the past as well that I hate the word transition and I’m not here to give excuses, but this is exactly what transition is. The young players are learning on the job. You've to give them time. I’m same guy under whom India did well in England, won the Champions Trophy and won the Asia Cup.”
