Aiden Markram headlined South Africa’s four-wicket win against India in the second ODI in Raipur. The opener scored a stroke-filled century, alongside half-centuries from Dewald Brevis and Matthew Breetzke to render Virat Kohli and Ruturaj Gaikwad’s hundreds, earlier in the game, in vain.

‌South Africa levelled the three-match ODI series in style with a thrilling four-wicket win in a high-scoring thriller in the second game in Raipur on Wednesday. Aiden Markram came up with a scintillating century and was well-supported by fifties from Dewald Brevis and Matthew Breetzke during the chase of 359, as South Africa ended at 362/6.

After being put into bat at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium, India were off to a good start aided by some erratic new ball bowling from the visitors. The pace bowling unit conceded 13 wides inside the first five overs before Nandre Burger and Marco Jansen made amends with the wickets of Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal, respectively, as India ended the powerplay at 66/2. However, the home side were well-served by Virat Kohli and Ruturaj Gaikwad, who repaired the innings, also getting runs in quick time. The in-form Virat, who started off with a stunning six, was cautious while Gaikwad found boundaries frequently to keep the Proteas at bay. With a dismissal eluding them for long enough, skipper Temba Bavuma went to his trusted part-timer Aiden Markram for a breakthrough. But the plan fell flat as India took advantage with 25 runs in his first two overs, with Gaikwad reaching his half-century in the second. The veteran batter followed suit in the next over with a 47-ball 50 as the side sat prettily at 158/2 at the halfway mark. The pair, then shifted gears, as they targeted Keshav Maharaj with Gaikwad being severe on the left-arm spinner with two fours and a six in a 16-run over. The Chennai Super Kings skipper continued in the same vein to reach the three-figure mark, in just 77 balls, with back-to-back boundaries off Corbin Bosch. Left-arm seamer Jansen proved the partnership breaker again ending the 195-run association with Gaikwad’s scalp. The Maharashtra batter hit 12 fours and two sixes during his knock of 105 in 83 balls while his partner Kohli completed his second straight century two overs later. The innings slowed down a bit with Kohli (102 off 93 balls) and Washington Sundar being dismissed in quick succession with the hosts managing just 43 runs in the eight overs between 39 and 47. However, skipper KL Rahul smashed a six and a four in a last-over blitz, plundering 18 runs off Bosch to take the side to 358/5 in their allotted 50 overs. The Indian captain remained unbeaten on 66 off 43 balls, his second half-century in two games, with six fours and two sixes, while Jansen finished as the pick among the Proteas’ bowlers with a spell of 2/63 in 10 overs.

In return, Aiden Markram started the chase on the front foot with three boundaries off Harshit Rana in the second over. Though they lost Quinton de Kock cheaply in the fifth over, the Proteas were well-served by a steady stand between Markram and captain Temba Bavuma. The pair welcomed Prasidh Krishna into the attack with a four and a six as the visitors ended the powerplay at 51/1. The pair continued to find the odd boundaries with Markram completing his half-century in the 15th over. However, the Karnataka pacer returned to break the 101-run partnership for the second wicket with the wicket of Bavuma but Markram looked in gret nick at the other end. He scored back-to-back boundaries off Prasidh before scoring maximums off spinners Washington Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja to reach his fourth ODI hundred. When Harshit Rana ended Markram’s 98-ball knock of 110, which included 10 fours and four sixes, the Proteas were left with 162 runs to be scored in the last 20 overs. But Matthew Breetzke and Dewald Brevis frustrated India with their 92-run stand for the fourth wicket that took the side close to the 300-run mark. The pair came up with contrasting half-centuries with Brevis being the aggressor smashing five sixes and a four during his 34-ball 54. Meanwhile, Breetzke accumulated his runs from the other end to score his seventh fifty-plus score this year in 11 matches. He hit five fours to make 68 off 64 balls before being dismissed by Prasidh in the 44th over. However, Bosch yet again came up with an invaluable knock (29 off 15) to take the Proteas over the line with four balls to spare.

South Africa tour of India | Twitter not impressed at Harshit Rana’s rush of blood to criticise umpireread next
Fast bowlers tend to lose their cool easily when batters target them, and Harshit Rana was a picture of frustration after being pummelled by Dewald Brevis in the second ODI in Raipur. The pacer took out his anger on the umpire, who, as per replays, gave the right call of a wide down the leg side.
