Yashasvi Jaiswal shone with an unbeaten century as India beat South Africa by nine wickets in the final ODI in Visakhapatnam on Saturday. Earlier, Prasidh Krishna and Kuldeep Yadav picked up four-wicket hauls to restrict the Proteas to 270 as the home side pocketed the three-match series 2-1.

‌India put on a dominant display to thump South Africa by nine wickets in the third and final ODI in Visakhapatnam on Saturday. Yashasvi Jaiswal shone with a maiden ODI  hundred to anchor India’s chase, with Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli chipping in with stroke-filled half-centuries as the home side sealed the series 2-1. It was a walk in the park for the Indian batters after Prasidh Krishna and Kuldeep Yadav combined admirably to pick up eight wickets between them to restrict the Proteas to 270 on a good batting surface.

After winning the toss for the first time after 20 ODIs, Indian skipper KL Rahul was visibly elated and had no hesitation in putting the visitors in. The start was not encouraging for the batting side, with Arshdeep Singh dismissing Ryan Rickelton cheaply in the first over. However, fellow opener Quinton de Kock and Temba Bavuma reconstructed the innings with a contrasting yet stable partnership. After three quiet overs, De Kock was fortunate enough to get two streaky boundaries over the slip cordon off Harshit Rana, while the Proteas skipper was cautious and slow off the blocks. The wicketkeeper-batter welcomed Prasidh Krishna into the attack with an attractive pull shot as the side ended the powerplay at 42/1. He went ballistic in the pacer’s next over, tonking two sixes and a boundary, but the hosts kept the scoring under check, operating spinners from both ends. De Kock brought up his fifty, in 42 balls, with a six off Ravindra Jadeja in the 16th over, while the visitors also reached 100/1 at the end of 19 overs. But the move eventually worked as Jadeja dismissed Bavuma, two runs short of his fifty, to break the 113-run partnership for the second wicket. However, De Kock continued unabated with a six and four off Kuldeep Yadav in the next over, while new batter Matthew Breetzke targeted part-time spinner Tilak Varma. Just as the Proteas were looking pretty at 167/2 after 28 overs, Prasidh brought the hosts right back with a double strike in his fourth over. The Gujarat Titans pacer trapped Breetzke plumb in front before inducing a false shot from Aiden Markram, who surprisingly came at number five. But De Kock was still there, completing his seventh ODI ton against India, yet again with a maximum, this time off Harshit Rana. But Prasidh cleaned him up two overs later, to end the southpaw’s innings at 106, which came off 89 balls and included six sixes and eight fours. Though Dewald Brevis and Marco Jansen got promising starts to give hopes of a 300-plus total, Kuldeep came up with an excellent second spell to bundle out the Proteas in quick time. The wrist spinner dismissed both set batters in the same over before accounting for Corbin Bosch and Lungi Ngidi later in the spell as the Proteas were bowled out with 13 balls to spare. The spinner ended with figures of 4/41 in 10 overs, with Prasidh also picking up four wickets for 66 runs in 9.5 overs.

In return, both Indian openers Rohit and Jaiswal started watchfully before the latter hit Ngidi over his head for the first six of the inning in the sixth over. Rohit also joined in with an authoritative pull shot in the pacer’s next over as the home side ended the powerplay at 48 without losing any wickets. Though Jaiswal was slow and steady from one end, the veteran batter kept finding boundaries from the other to reach his half-century in the 20th over as the hosts crossed the 100-run mark in the same over. The former Indian skipper, then, upped the ante, targeting Bosch with two sixes in two overs as the young opener also brought up his maiden ODI fifty, in 75 balls, with a single off Ngidi in the next. Both players then opened up with an array of strokes, as 25 runs came in the next two over to take their opening stand past 150 runs. But Rohit Sharma miscued a slog sweep off Keshav Maharaj to be dismissed for 75 from 73 balls, after gracing his knock with seven fours and three sixes. However, Jaiswal and new batter Kohli ensured that there was no respite for the bowlers with the former pacing his innings well in the second half, while the latter rotated the strike well to reduce the target to 70 in the last 17 overs. From then on there was no turning back as Kohli entertained the crowd with a boundary and an audacious no-look six off Bosch. The young Jaiswal brought up his century an over later, with the second fifty coming in just 36 balls. Meanwhile, Kohli also accelerated proceeding with two sixes and two fours in six balls to complete his half-century. The pair’s unbeaten stand of 116 runs for the second wicket took India to 271/1 with more than 10 overs to spare. Jaiswal hit 12 fours and two sixes during his 121-ball 116, while the veteran batter finsished the game of in style with back-to-back boundaries to end at 65 off 45 balls, a knock which had six fours and three sixes. For the Proteas, left-arm spinner Maharaj was their only bowler with a wicket, bowling his 10 overs for 44 runs.
