IND vs SA | Twitter left guessing after uncertainty clouds Jasprit Bumrah’s 100th scalp in T20Is

Jasprit Bumrah reached a landmark 100 wickets in T20Is during the first game against South Africa in Cuttack. The Indian pacer dismissed Dewald Brevis to reach the landmark, with replays showing his front foot landing just ahead of the line, but the third umpire ruling in the bowler’s favour.

‌After being put into bat by South Africa in the first T20I at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack, India suffered early jitters to be reduced to 78/4 inside 12 overs. But Hardik Pandya marked his return from injury in style with an unbeaten half-century, smashing four sixes and six fours during his 28-ball knock of 59.

The all-rounder’s exploits took the home side to 175/6 with Tilak Varma and Axar Patel also chipping in with useful 20s. The Proteas, however, had a forgettable start to their chase, losing Quinton de Kock to Arshdeep Singh in the second ball of the innings.

They never recovered from that, losing wickets at frequent intervals to be reduced to 68/6 at the halfway mark. With Dewald Brevis getting off to a good start to hit three fours and a six to reach 22 off just 12 balls, skipper Suryakumar Yadav rightly brought back his spearhead Jasprit Bumrah in the 11th over.

And the results were there to see instantaneously as the pacer induced a false shot from the South African batter. He bowled on a short of a length outside off, catching the Chennai Super Kings player late on the pull. As a result, the ball ballooned straight to Surya at extra cover to take the bowler to a landmark 100 wickets in T20Is.

But the replays showed the pacer landing on the popping crease with no part of his foot behind the line. Though the third umpire stepped in with the review, he did not overturn the decision, ruling in favour of the bowler.

Replays from different angles also validated the case in point, with Brevis feeling hard done by the umpire’s decision. Twitter was left guessing as a cloud of controversy marred the pacer reaching a century of wickets in each international format.
