The Sydney Thunder opening pair of Matthew Gilkes and Sam Konstas took their chemistry to another level with an excellent catch in their BBL match against Perth Scorchers. The duo pulled off a stunning relay catch in the boundary to pick up the wicket of Joel Paris in the last ball of the innings.

‌Ashton Turner came with a captain’s knock to rescue Perth Scorchers in their Big Bash League 2025-26 away game against Sydney Thunder on Tuesday. The tall right-hander smashed eight sixes and eight fours en route to reach an unbeaten 99 in just 41 balls as the visitors went past the 200-run mark in the final over at the Sydney Showground Stadium.

With 14 runs required to reach the three-figure mark, Turner started the last over in style with two huge sixes before a single saw him get stranded at the other end. The home side picked up two wickets in the last two balls to end the innings at 202/8 as the Scorchers’ skipper ended a run short of his century.

The second of those dismissals was the result of some slick fielding effort from the Thunder’s opening duo of Matthew Gilkes and Sam Konstas. Joel Paris tried to go big against a good length delivery angled into him by Daniel Sams off the last ball of the 20th over.

But the powerful swipe on the leg side found Gilkes at the midwicket fence, who took the catch, but found himself just in front of the boundary cushion. However, he showed great awareness, throwing the ball back into the field in the nick of time before losing his balance and falling beyond the ropes.

His partner Konstas, who was stationed at deep square leg, came running towards Gilkes and made no mistake in completing the catch with a simple effort. He ran towards Gilkes to celebrate the dismissal, as the latter entered the field of play, before the duo jogged back to the dugout amid applause from the teammates and a rapturous crowd.

Twitter was in awe as the pair extended their chemistry up top with the willow to new levels on the field.
