Cricket careers could also have a dramatic end. And by dramatic end, we mean something which even fans could not expect happening to a player due to which they considered time off the game. Recently, a player has informed his cricket board that from drug addiction.
Due to this reason, he also decided to withdraw himself from the T20 World Cup 2026. This comes as a shocking move for Zimbabwe, as their experienced player, Sean Williams, took this decision. While Williams said that he won't be playing in the T20 World Cup, the Zimbabwe cricket board has made sure that he won't be picked again, marking an end to his career.
Sean Williams will not be considered for national selection by Zimbabwe Cricket. Being aged 39, he has given a lot to the team but the board has cited some reasons for his exclusion. The board Williams has “a history of disciplinary issues and repeated unavailability, which has impacted team preparations and performance.”
Zimbabwe was set to play the T20 World Cup Qualifiers. But just before the tournament, he decided to withdraw himself from the tournament, due to personal reasons. Following this, the Zimbabwe Cricket decided to conduct an investigation and know what could be the reason behind which he is not being able to play for the team.
Sean Williams that he is going through drug rehabilitation, and was struggling with addiction. To this, the board issued a statement saying, “ZC expects all contracted players to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, discipline and compliance with team protocols and anti-doping regulations. While ZC commends him for seeking rehabilitation, withdrawal from team commitments under circumstances involving potential testing raises serious concerns regarding professional and ethical standards.”
Being addicted to drugs could have also led to some serious actions on Sean Williams. It is still not clear whether the drugs he used were to improve his name or not. But the ZC decided that they should take action for the same as soon as possible. It should also be noted that Sean Williams had earlier been involved in several disciplinary actions.
At last, Zimbabwe Cricket said, “ZC sincerely acknowledges and appreciates his immense contribution to Zimbabwean cricket over the past two decades. Williams has played a pivotal role in some of the most significant moments in our recent history, leaving a lasting legacy both on and off the field. ZC wishes him strength in his recovery, and every success in his future endeavours.”
Sean Williams had a long lasting career for the Zimbabwe team. He started off by playing for the team for the very first time in 2005. It was in an ODI match against South Africa, where Williams was able to get his maiden cap for the team. His debut game didn't go well as he scored just 12 runs off 26 balls before being run out.

After this, Sean Williams started to dominate for Zimbabwe across all formats of the game. Being an all-rounder, he proved his worth and skills to the team with every match. Eventually, this led to Williams being a crucial part of the team as time passed and he also led the team across 21 matches from 2019 to 2025.
Having scored 14 centuries and 56 half-centuries, Williams was a great batsman for the Zimbabwe cricket team. But such an end to his cricket career has shocked the fans worldwide. He was already at the age of retirement, but he got away from the game in the
Moreover, Sean Williams was not just a batsman who scored runs for the team against the associate nations. He has scored tons against New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, and Sri Lanka, which shows that he was able to perform well for the team across the ICC full-time members too.
