IND vs SA | Twitter in awe as Bumrah hits top of off with panache before producing another jaffa

Jasprit Bumrah has always been the go-to man for India to produce breakthroughs, and he delivered for the nth time against South Africa. After the Proteas got off to a good start, the pacer produced jaffas to remove both set openers in the first session of the opening Test in Kolkata.

‌South Africa were off to a flying start against India, after winning the toss in the first Test at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Friday. The opening duo of Aiden Markram and Ryan Rickelton hit eight fours and a six to amass 57 runs in the first 10 overs.

However, Jasprit Bumrah was consistent as usual with the new ball, conceding just nine runs and bowling two maidens in his first five overs. Unsurprisingly, captain Shubman Gill persisted with him from one end, and the move bore immediate results.

Coming from around the wicket, Bumrah kept the first two balls on the stumps after pitching on a good length, with Rickelton defending both out. Off the third, the pacer produced a jaffa that pitched on a length again around middle stump before straightening just a little.

The left-handed opener played with the angle, but the ball went straight to sound timber, much to the delight of the pacer and the home side. Rickelton was stunned as the red cherry hit top of off and took a moment to realise what had transpired before starting his way back.

The Mumbai Indians pacer was not done yet as he came back for a seventh over to remove the other opener Markram, too. This time, he shortened the length a bit, with the ball jumping onto the Lucknow Super Giants player, who tried to fend it off with his willow. But the ball took an outside edge with Rishabh Pant diving to his right.

And in the blink of an eye, the Proteas were 62/2, courtesy of Bumrah, who produced a set of peaches to dismiss both openers. Twitter was in awe of the pacer’s ability to produce unplayable deliveries at an alarming frequency.
