Wicketkeepers tend to celebrate prematurely after collecting the ball and Kyle Verreynne was caught in an embarrassing position against India in Kolkata. The South African wicketkeeper went up straight away after collecting a ball, before a cold response from his teammates brought him to ground.

‌South Africa had an excellent start after opting to bat against India in the first Test at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Friday. Openers Ryan Rickelton and Aiden Markram found the boundaries frequently as the visitors motored on to reach 57/0 after the first 10 overs.

However, Jasprit Bumrah brought the home side right back into the game with the wickets of both openers in consecutive overs. After that, the Proteas endured a stunning collapse, folding out for just 159 runs at the start of the third session. Bumrah picked up his 16th five-wicket haul to end with figures of 5/27, while Tony de Zorzi and Wiaan Mulder were the only other batters, apart from the opening duo, to cross the 20-run mark.

The visitors, in the hunt for early wickets, started well with Marco Jansen bowling a maiden to Yashasvi Jaiswal. In the fourth ball of the next over, Mulder bowled a length delivery on leg stump that swung in to go down the leg to Kyle Verreynne.

The wicketkeeper was excited as he collected the ball and jumped straight away in celebration. The umpire, however, remained unmoved as he nodded in disapproval just as the gloveman looked for some support from his teammates.

But he was greeted with a stunning silence from the Proteas, with Mulder being the only exception as he raised his arm half-heartedly. Bavuma was quick to dismiss Verreynne’s request for a review, with Markram also joining in with his disagreement.

The replays vindicated the visitors’ skipper’s stance as the ball hit the thigh pad on its way to the keeper. Twitter was quick to troll Verreynne, who smiled sheepishly before returning to his mark for the next ball.
