Wickets in the powerplay always put the batting side on the back foot, and Marufa Akter had Pakistan reeling during the Women’s ODI World Cup match in Colombo. The Bangladesh pacer picked up two wickets in two balls in the first over of the game, to leave the Pakistan dugout shocked.

‌Pakistan were jolted by Bangladesh in their opening match of the Women’s ODI World Cup after opting to bat at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. Pacer Marufa Akter had a dream debut in the marquee event as she produced two stunning deliveries in the first over of the match.

With Omaima Sohail taking guard to face her first ball, fifth of the innings, Marufa ran in to bowl a beautiful inswinger that pitched on a good length outside off stump before going through the batter’s defence. The ball hit the top of the middle stump, clipping the bails off, as the young pacer jumped in joy.

In-form batter Sidra Amin walked in and suffered the same fate on her very first ball. She got an inside edge while trying to defend an inswinging delivery as the ball went onto disturb the timber.

Marufa took off for a similar celebration and pumped her fist as the teammates rushed to congratulate her. Sidra was visibly frustrated as she departed without scoring for the first time in an ODI in six years.

Twitter was stunned by the 20-year-old pacer’s show, which sent shivers down the Pakistan team’s dressing room. The Women in Green’s dugout could not believe what turned out as Bangladesh took early advantage in the game.
