Rajat Patidar has set his eyes on yet another trophy this year. As he leads the Rest of India in the Irani Cup, the captain seems to be carrying the team alone. With Patidar handling various responsibilities as a captain, is it the right time for him to come back in the Indian team?

After winning various trophies as a captain this year, Rajat Patidar leads Rest of India in the Irani Cup. Currently, Vidarbha takes an upper hand in the game after taking a massive lead in the first innings. Vidarbha scored 342 runs in the first innings. Later, they also displayed a strong bowling performance.

As a result, the Rest of India scored just 214 runs in its first innings. Amidst this, Patidar seemed to have carried the line-up alone,. Except for him, only Abhimanyu Easwaran scored a half-century, and no other player was able to cross even the 30-run mark. With an impressive form, can Rajat Patidar finally make his comeback to the Indian team?

1. Golden Year for Patidar

Rajat Patidar has gained a lot of attention in 2025, not just with his batting skills. Also, his captaincy became the talk of the town when fans saw Patidar doing the impossible. It all started with the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024, when Patidar led his team to the finals.

Even after his heroics, Madhya Pradesh fell short of defeating Mumbai in the finals. But RCB saw his potential as a captain. And with Faf du Plessis not being retained by the team, it was time for them to look for a new captain. Thus, Rajat Patidar was announced as the new captain of Royal Challengers Bengaluru for the IPL 2025 season.

. He led the team to finish in second place in the standings, and also made RCB the first team to reach the finals. In the final clash, Patidar led RCB to win the cup against Punjab Kings in a thriller. And finally, he became the first-ever RCB captain to win an IPL trophy.

But this is not where his stint as a captain came to an end in a golden year. Rajat Patidar was also announced as the captain of Central Zone in the Duleep Trophy. The team had not won the title in a decade. It was thought that if Patidar could end RCB’s 17-year streak, he might also end theirs.

. Rajat Patidar led Central Zone to win the Duleep Trophy with ease, holding another trophy just three months after helping RCB to win the IPL. He also finished as the top run scorer, with 382 runs in 3 matches at an average of 76.40.

2. Will Patidar Make India Squad Comeback?

Since the home series against England in 2024, Rajat Patidar has not played a single game for the Indian team. He did not do well in the three matches and was finally taken out of the line-up. Nonetheless, Patidar is currently being actively included in the India A team.

Rajat Patidar in the Test format:

  • Innings: 6
  • Not Out: 0
  • Runs: 63
  • Average: 10.50
  • Strike Rate: 38.41
  • High Score: 32

He was selected as a captain for the India A team in the Australia A series. But with him leading Rest of India in the Irani Cup, the BCCI had to change the India A line-up a bit. With Patidar now being able to perform well and consistently, it seems that he is ready to regain his spot in the Indian team. But the question is, who will Rajat Patidar replace in the squad?
