New Zealand Women beat Bangladesh Women by 100 runs in a group game of the ODI World Cup. Captain Sophie Devine and Brooke Halliday scored gritty half-centuries to take the White Ferns to a respectable total before a disciplined bowling attack skittled out Bangladesh to hand them their first points.
After opting to bat first at the Assam Cricket Association Stadium, New Zealand made a steady start as openers Suzie Bates and Georgia Plimmer put on 35 runs inside nine overs. Bates ended her horrific run of two ducks in two games as she thrashed the out-of-sorts medium pacer Marufa Akter for five boundaries in two overs. But the reintroduction of Rabeya Khan turned the tide in the Tigresses’ favour as the leg-spinner flummoxed Plimmer to catch her short of the crease. A ball later, fellow opener Bates got involved in a mix-up with Amelia Kerr and had to walk back for 29. Soon, Kerr became Rabeya’s second victim as she was undone by a beauty that beat her and unsettled the stumps. The White Ferns slipped from 35/0 to 38/3, with in-form batter Devine joined by Halliday in the middle. The pair took their time against the Bangladesh spinners on a slow and sluggish surface, adding just 46 runs in the next 14 overs. Halliday brought up her fifty in style with a four over mid-on in the 32nd over before taking Shorna Akter past the ropes with a huge hit. Meanwhile, Devine was a picture of restraint at the other end, but showed signs of shifting gears with two boundaries of Marufa in the 38th over. The Kiwis were placed at 153/4 after 40 overs, shortly after Halliday departed for a 104-ball 69, a knock which included five fours and a six. The hot and humid conditions took a toll on Devine as she decided to take the aerial route against Nishita Akter Nishi. She smashed two sixes in the first two balls, the first of which brought her a half-century, her third fifty-plus score this tournament. But the off-spinner had the last laugh as she castled Devine a ball later as she attempted a big shot in vain. The New Zealand skipper hit two fours and two sixes during her hardworking knock of 63, which came in 85 balls. With some valuable contributions from the lower order, the Kiwis ended their innings at 227/9, a score that looked par on a difficult surface. For the Tigresses, Rabeya was the pick among their bowlers with an impressive spell of 3/30 in 10 overs.
In reply, the Bangladesh openers could not do much against some accurate bowling from the new-ball duo of Rosemary Mair and Jess Kerr. Mair opened the floodgates with a beautiful inswinger that went through the defence of Sharmin Akhter in the fifth over. Kerr joined the party, three overs later, as the other opener Rubya Haider perished while trying to break the shackles with an intended big hit. From then on, there was no way forward for Bangladesh as they kept losing wickets with the scoreboard wearing a static look. Leg-spinner Amelia Kerr accounted for captain Nigar Sultana Joti in her second over, while Lea Tahuhu, playing her 100th ODI, picked up two wickets in a single over to reduce the Asian side to 33/6. Some resistance from the lower order saw them go past the 100-run mark, but the result was beyond doubt. Finally, their innings ended at 127 in the 40th over, with Fahima Khatun top-scoring with a dour 34 off 80 balls and Rabeya supporting her with a knock of 25. For the Kiwis, Jess Kerr ended with impressive figures of 3/21 in eight overs while Tahuhu had 3/22 in six overs.

The only thing
The only thing I have seen in this ICC Women's World Cup is that the stronger the middle order, the greater the chance to win the game..
