The reflexes of umpires often go under the radar, as it is difficult to avoid the ball than to catch it. Sarah Dambanevana reacted pretty quickly during the Women’s ODI World Cup game between New Zealand and Bangladesh to save herself from a powerful drive that could have caused a grievous injury.
However, Devine, who has been in wonderful form, made her third fifty-plus score in the tournament. She was well-supported by Brooke Halliday (69), as the pair added 112 runs for the fourth wicket to bail out the White Ferns.
But with both the set batters back in the hut by the 44th over and the score reading 181/5, Maddy Green decided to pull out her big shots to take the side to a competitive total. After stepping down the track to hit Nahida Akter for a boundary in the fourth ball of the 45th over, Green repeated the feat a ball later.
This time, she went straight back, smashing a good length delivery on the middle stump. The ball fizzed past the left-arm spinner’s outstretched arms and was headed towards the main umpire Sarah Dambanevana.
Thankfully, she ducked immediately before moving towards her right, with the flying Kookaburra passing her hat by a whisker. She nodded her head in a sigh of relief after surviving a close shave, before letting out a sheepish smile.
Twitter was on the edge as the umpire’s quick reflexes saw her come out unscathed, and she took a moment to recover before moving to the square leg side.
