Mix-ups between batters prove costly for the team, but Shubman Gill nearly went through another brainfade during the second Test against the West Indies in Delhi. After a terrible miscommunication resulted in Yashasvi Jaiswal’s dismissal, the Indian captain nearly repeated the feat with Dhruv Jurel.

‌India extended their domination over the West Indies on the second day of the second Test at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. Starting the day at 318/2, the home side quickly moved past the 400-run mark, though they lost two wickets in the first session.

Shubman Gill did well to recover after a horrific mix-up with Yashasvi Jaiswal cost the latter a deserving double century. The Indian skipper completed his half-century and continued to find boundaries frequently. Nitish Reddy, who was promoted to number five for some quick runs, also chipped in with a quick 43 before being dismissed trying to go for a big one.

New batter Dhruv Jurel settled in nicely as India looked keen to go into lunch without the loss of another wicket. But both batters survived a scare when they nearly got entangled in another mix-up in the very last ball before the break.

Gill punched a shortish delivery from Khary Pierre towards the right of the short mid-wicket fielder and took off for a quick single. Jurel responded as he took the initial steps as well, but the fielder was swift as he hoped to cut the ball.

Just then, both batters remained ball-watching and hesitated as the Indian skipper had second thoughts about returning to his crease. Jurel was also caught in two minds as he also nurtured thoughts of running back to the non-striker end.

The fielder slowed down a bit before both batters continued their march towards the other end, and India went for lunch at 427/4. It would have been another disaster if the fielder had stopped the ball, with the Indian captain proving guilty of yet another mix-up.

But luckily, the hosts were saved as Gill was quick to offer an apology to Jurel before both proceeded to the dressing room. His sheepish smile was more of relief, of not being the culprit for yet another runout in the Indian camp.

Twitter was on the edge as Harsha Bhogle funnily mentioned that the skipper will soon run into Jaiswal in the dressing room.
