The Sri Lanka vs New Zealand game in the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup was called off due to persistent rain in Colombo. Heavy downpour during the interval first led to a delay in the start before another spell of showers just before the restart abandoned the game, with both teams winning a point each.

‌Rain had the final say as the Sri Lanka vs New Zealand game in the Women’s ODI World Cup 2025 was washed out in Colombo on Tuesday. Heavy downpour during the halftime delayed the restart of proceedings, and just as a shortened 30-over chase was about to kick off, another spell of showers abandoned the game, with both sides getting a point apiece.

It was the second game that was abandoned without a result in Colombo after the Sri Lanka-Australia game ended with the teams sharing points. New Zealand are currently fifth with three points from four games, while the Lankans are placed second from bottom with two points.

Sri Lanka Women started steadily after opting to bat against New Zealand in the ICC World Cup 2025 game at R Premadasa Stadium. Captain Chamari Athapaththu kept the scoreboard ticking with frequent boundaries despite Vishmi Gunaratne’s indifferent start as the home side reached 52/0 at the end of the mandatory powerplay. But the scoring dropped severely after the fielding restrictions were lifted, as the hosts went without a boundary for 55 balls. Athapaththu completed her fifty off 67 balls before holing out in the deep off her counterpart Sophie Devine. The Sri Lankan skipper hit seven fours during her 71-ball 53 and added 101 runs for the opening wicket with Gunaratne (42), who also departed five overs later. However, Hasini Perera and Harshitha Samarawickrama took the innings forward with a 58-run partnership for the third wicket in 12 overs. But left-arm pacer Bree Illing triggered a collapse, sending back both set batters in consecutive overs as the home side slipped from 183/2 to 198/5 with only seven overs to play. But Nilakshika Silva’s quickfire half-century helped Sri Lanka to score 56 runs in the last seven overs to end their innings at 258/6. The middle-order batter hit seven fours and a six, including three fours in the final over, to remain unbeaten on 55 off 28 balls. The White Ferns’ skipper Sophie Devine was the pick among their bowlers with a spell of 3/54, while Illing ended with 2/39. Unfortunately, that was the final piece of action in the day as rain brought an early end to proceedings.
