Indian vice-captain Shreyas Iyer injured his rib cage during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney. Shreyas landed awkwardly after completing an outstanding catch, running backwards, to dismiss Alex Carey, and went off the field before being taken to the hospital for further evaluation.

‌Shreyas Iyer had an unfortunate injury during the third and final ODI against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Saturday. The Indian vice-captain injured his rib cage after completing a catch of Alex Carey and went off the field before being taken to the hospital.

The Punjab Kings skipper did not play further part in the game, with the Board of Control for Cricket in India announcing that “he is undergoing further evaluation and assessment”. Shreyas was stationed at backward point as wicketkeeper-batter Alex Carey miscued while going for a big hit off Harshit Rana in the 34th over of the game. The middle order immediately ran backwards, covering a lot of ground before completing a stunning catch.

But he landed awkwardly, with his left side of the body hitting the ground hard, and the batter wincing in pain. He was attended by the physios immediately, but could not continue on the field and was taken in.

Australia managed to make 236 before being bowled out in the 47th over, with Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s unbeaten 168-run stand taking the side home with more than 11 overs to spare. Rohit top-scored in the game with 121 runs off 125 balls, while Kohli chipped in with an 81-ball 74 as the Men in Blue ended the ODI leg of the tour with a consolation win.

Post the five-match T20I series, India will host South Africa for an all-format series, with the three-match ODI series starting in Ranchi on November 30.
