India’s last group game against Bangladesh in the Women’s ODI World Cup in Navi Mumbai was abandoned due to rain. With a point shared between both sides, the Women in Blue finished fourth in the points table with seven points from seven games and will meet Australia in the semifinal on Thursday.
India’s final group game against Bangladesh in the Women’s ODI World Cup at the Dr DY Patil Sports Academy in Navi Mumbai was washed out on Sunday. Both sides got a point each as the hosts finished fourth in the points table with seven points from seven games. The Women in Blue will now meet Australia Women, who finished on top with 13 points, in the semifinal at the same venue on Thursday.
With rain and a wet outfield delaying proceedings initially, the game was shortened to a 43-over affair before Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur put the visitors in after winning the toss. Medium-pacer Renuka Singh gave the hosts an excellent start striking in the first over to send opener Sumaiya Akter back. Off-spinner Deepti Sharma accounted for fellow opener Rubya Haider before heavy downpour forced the players back into the dressing room after 12.2 overs with the score reading 39/2. The match was further reduced to 27-over-a-side before play restarted after a lengthy delay. The visitors continued to lose wickets at regular intervals as they ended their innings at 119/9 with Sharmin Akhter top-scoring for them with a knock of 36 runs. Sobhana Mostary also chipped in, hitting four boundaries during her 21-ball 26. For India, the left-arm spin duo of Radha Yadav and Shree Charani were impressive with spells of 3/30 and 2/23 in six overs, respectively.
With a revised target of 126, opener Smriti Mandhana walked onto the field, along with Amanjot Kaur, after Pratika Rawal was taken off the field with an ankle injury in the first innings. Smriti looked in good nick throughout her unbeaten knock of 34, which included six fours, and came in 27 balls. India went past the 50-run mark inside seven overs and looked set to end their group campaign with a win before the clouds opened up yet again, two overs later. After another spell of heavy rains, the match was finally called off with both teams being awarded a point each.
