NZ W vs ENG W | Twitter in tears as Sophie Devine bids adieu to ODIs with guard of honour from both sides

Sophie Devine led New Zealand for one final time in ODIs when they met England in their final group game in the Women’s World Cup in Visakhapatnam. It was not an ideal farewell for the veteran cricketer as the White Ferns lost the contest, but both teams gave her a memorable guard of honour.

‌Sophie Devine had already announced that the 2025 ODI World Cup in India and Sri Lanka would be her last appearance in the 50-over format. The New Zealand captain’s eyes welled up with tears as she sang the national anthem with her teammates ahead of the start of the last group match against England in Visakhapatnam.

With the White Ferns already out of contention for a spot in the semifinals, Devine was looking to have a memorable outing and bow out of this format on a high. However, she could not make it count with the bat, getting out for 23 off 35 balls as the Kiwis were bowled out for a modest total.

She picked up a wicket with the ball, but England cantered home with an eight-wicket win with more than 20 overs to spare. However, her disappointment of not putting up a show on her last dance was soon pushed to the background as both teams lined up to give an adoring farewell to one of the greatest all-rounders of the game.

Just as Devine was leading her team back after the customary handshakes, the Kiwi players sprinted ahead from both sides as they got ready to give the veteran all-rounder a guard of honour. The England players also joined in as she walked between the wall amidst loud applause from the players.

She embraced England captain Nat Sciver-Brunt and head coach Charlotte Edwards before waving her hand at the crowd and other players before calling them back in. Twitter was in tears as New Zealand’s second-most capped Women’s ODI player walked into the sunset of her 50-over career.
