Shreyas Iyer is medically stable and continues to recover at a hospital in Sydney after injuring himself while taking a catch against Australia in the third ODI. The Indian vice-captain was immediately taken off the field, and scans revealed he suffered a laceration to his spleen.

‌The Board of Control for Cricket in India has released a medical update on Shreyas Iyer’s injury suffered during the final ODI against Australia on Saturday. The Indian vice-captain is medically stable but continues to be in the ICU in a hospital in Sydney after scans revealed a laceration to his spleen.

“Shreyas Iyer sustained an impact injury to his left lower rib cage region while fielding during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney on Saturday”, a BCCI statement said. “He was taken to the hospital for further evaluation.

“Scans have revealed a laceration injury to the spleen. He is under treatment, medically stable, and recovering well. The BCCI Medical Team, in consultation with specialists in Sydney and India, is closely monitoring his injury status. The Indian Team Doctor will remain in Sydney with Shreyas to evaluate his day-to-day progress.”

Shreyas, who was stationed at backward point, ran backwards to take a splendid catch to dismiss Alex Carey before landing awkwardly on his left rib. The Mumbai batter, who looked in discomfort, was immediately taken off the field and played no further part in the game. The BCCI had initially announced that the middle-order batter would undergo further evaluation and assessment before the scan results were out.

India concluded the three-match ODI series with a consolation nine-wicket win in Sydney, and the visitors are also scheduled to play five T20Is Down Under, with the first match set for Canberra on October 29. Shreyas is not part of the T20I squad but will remain in Sydney with an Indian team doctor, who will evaluate his progress on a day-to-day basis.

India’s next ODI assignment is a three-match home tie against South Africa starting from November 30 in Ranchi. However, currently, there is no news whether the Punjab Kings skipper will be fit for the Proteas duel.
