Ranji Trophy | Twitter in splits as Urvil Patel pulls all stops to convince umpire in hilarious appeal

Players are often seen making vociferous appeals to get under the skin of the umpire, but Urvil Patel went a step ahead during Gujarat’s Ranji Trophy game against Bengal. The wicketkeeper tried mimicking the batter behind the wickets to convince the umpire in Eden Gardens, but to no avail.

‌Bengal won their second consecutive game in the Ranji Trophy 2025-26 campaign, beating Gujarat by a whopping 141 runs at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Pacer Mohammed Shami picked up eight wickets, including a five-wicket haul in the second innings, while left-arm spinner Shahbaz Ahmed was awarded the Player of the Match for his nine-wicket match haul.

Gujarat batter Urvil Patel, after walking in at number three in the second innings, fought hard with an unbeaten ton in pursuit of a formidable 327. But his side was skittled out for 185 runs as the home side maintained their 100% record in the domestic tournament this season.

However, the wicketkeeper was involved in a hilarious LBW appeal against Kazi Saifi in Bengal’s second essay on the third day. Saifi, who came in the second innings as an injury replacement for Sudip Chatterjee, tried to pad away a flighted delivery from left-arm spinner Siddharth Desai.

The ball pitched on a length well outside the off-stump before turning into the southpaw as he made a giant stride with the bat well behind his pads. Amid vociferous shouts by the bowler and close-in fielders, Urvil tried to grab the umpire’s attention with a hilarious appeal.

He immediately moved away from the wicket to mimic the batter in a bid to make the umpire understand that there was no shot offered. He kept his right leg forward before exaggeratedly shaking his hips to convince the official, but there was no reaction at all as the umpire nodded his head in the negative.

Twitter was rolling on the floor laughing as Urvil went about creating his own version of ‘Hips Don’t Lie’.
