The battles between batters and bowlers is always a treat to watch in a game of cricket, no matter which format we are seeing. A similar battle was witnessed in the opening game of the Women’s World Cup between Deepti Sharma and Chamari Athapaththu, where the offie got the last laugh in the end.

‌The first game of the Women’s ODI World Cup is being hosted by the Assam Cricket Association and it has been match filled with twists and turns between the Women in Blue and the Lankan Lionesses. India Women had set a competitive target of 271 for the Lankans in the first innings despite facing trouble in the first half with the score reading 125/6. The players who rescued the team were Deepti Sharma and Amanjot Kaur who formed a 100+ stand to get the team out of trouble. Though the two had done a commendable job with the bat, it was now time for the all-rounders to show their ability with the ball.
Though Kaur did was not able to get a breakthrough, Deepti had not started her spell strongly as Sri Lankan skipper Chamari Aththapathu smashed her for a couple of fours and sixes in her first two overs. The Indian off-spinner had conceded 23 runs in her first 12 balls and was put under the pump by the Lankan opener. Fortunately, Deepti got another opportunity to win the battle in her third over and got the better of the Sri Lankan captain. She only conceded two runs in the over and finally knocked over her stumps on the last delivery after throwing the ball back aggressively back at the batter in the fifth. As Athapaththu was dismissed after a knock of 43 off 47, Deepti celebrated with a roar after finally getting the big fish.
