Manchester United are reconsidering plans to sign an elite midfielder in January as concerns grow over Ruben Amorim’s future. Despite recent improvements, the 1 to 0 loss to 10 man Everton reignited pressure on the manager. INEOS fears investing heavily before a possible change in leadership, leaving squad upgrades uncertain.
As the pressure grows around Manchester United, a new report suggests the club may block an elite midfield signing in January due to rising doubts about manager Ruben Amorim. The Portuguese coach survived a difficult debut season that ended with United finishing 15th in the 2024 season, and although INEOS backed him in the summer with new signings including Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Senne Lammens, concerns have resurfaced after a 1-0 defeat against 10 man Everton at Old Trafford.
United’s improved form earlier this season came after tactical tweaks and the sale of several big names such as Marcus Rashford, Antony, Rasmus Hojlund, Jadon Sancho and Alejandro Garnacho. However, injuries to Sesko and Cunha exposed the team’s lack of depth, and United struggled badly in the Everton defeat. A defensive midfielder remains the club’s priority after missing out on Brighton’s Carlos Baleba, with Elliot Anderson and Adam Wharton also linked.
But an insider report with more than 680k followers claims the owners are hesitant to spend heavily because Amorim may not last the season. According to the report, the club fears investing in a major signing that a new manager may not want, further weakening Amorim’s already uncertain position.
