India’s Jeremy Lalrinnunga bags silver medal in Thailand event

16-year old Indian weightlifter, Jeremy Lalrinnunga, secured the silver medal in the men's 67kg category at the EGAT's Cup International Weightlifting Championships in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Earlier, Lalrinnunga bagged the gold medal at last year’s Youth Olympics Games which was held in Argentina.

Indian teenager, Jeremy Lalrinnunga, emerged as one of the rising stars at the 2018 Youth Olympics which was held in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The young lad from Mizoram bagged the gold medal in the boys 62 kg category to add to India’s impressive medal tally at the intercontinental event.

Jeremy added to his medal count recently as he secured the silver medal at the at the EGAT's Cup International Weightlifting Championships in Chiang Mai, Thailand on Friday. The 16-year-old boy lifted 131kg in snatch and 157kg in clean and jerk for a total of 288kg. However, Lalrinnunga was far behind the gold medal winner, Deni of Indonesia who lifted 303kg (132+171). Ruben Katoatau of Kiribati took the bronze with a total lift of 285kg (125+160).

Earlier last week, Mirabai Chanu of India bagged a gold medal upon her return from a lower back injury in the same event as she lifted a total of 192kg (82+110). Meanwhile, Swati Singh and Kopparthi Shireesha finished sixth and ninth in 59kg category with total lifts of 195kg and 189kg respectively.

This tournament is a silver level Olympic qualifying event, the points from which will be counted when the final rankings for Tokyo 2020 cut are completed.
