Indian peddlers continue to shine at Asian junior championships

Indian peddlers carried on their good show at the Asian Junior and Cadet Championships in Myanmar as they went on to bag three medals in the individual events on Friday night. Manav Thakkar won two bronze medals in junior boys’ doubles and mixed doubles categories in the championship.

The Indian table tennis team has already created history by booking a berth in the finals of the championships and now the show in the doubles category will lift their performance for sure. Manav paired with Manush Shah to win a bronze in boys’ doubles while with Archana Kamath, the junior world No. 5, again finished third in the mixed doubles category. The other boys’ doubles pair comprising Jeet Chandra and Snehit Surajulla also finished third in the championship.

Manav and Manush started their campaign by winning their Round of 16 match against Chua Sao Han Josh and Yu Zong Jun Gerald from Singapore before thrashing the Iranian combination of Amin Ahmadian and Amirreza Abbasi Monjezi 3-0 to advance into the semi-finals. They lost to China’s Xu Yingbin and Yu Heyi 0-3 and had to settle with a bronze.

Manav and Archana first got the better of the Kazakhstan pair of Akasheva Zhauresh and Kenzhigulov Aidos 3-1 in the Round of 16 and then defeated Peng Chih and Chien Tung-Chuan from China by an identical scoreline to qualify for the top four. In the semi-final, this Indian pair was also defeated by a Chinese pair of Xu Yingbin and Shi Xunyao 2-3 and had to remain content with a bronze.
