Manika Batra has decided to end her long association with childhood coach Sandeep Gupta from Delhi and will now train under Sanmay Paranjpe in Pune. India’s leading female paddler had started training under Gupta when she was only eight-year-old and continued under him for 15 years.

In a recent development in the table tennis circle of India, the leading female player Batra has now decided to shift her base from Delhi to Pune. She will now be under the guidance of Paranjpe after ending ties with her childhood coach Gupta. After enrolling under Gupta in Delhi’s Punjabi Bagh, Batra continuously played under him and achieved greater heights in her career.

The secretary of the Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI) MP Singh has confirmed the news and said that it was Batra’s personal decision and the federation has wished the paddler all the best for the future competitions.

"In the TOPS meeting held on March 18, Manika conveyed her decision to the committee. It is a personal decision and we wish her all the best," Singh told PTI.

Batra had won as many as four medals at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games last year and created history. The 23-year-old had also clinched a singles gold in the Games in Australia a year ago and later in 2018, at the Asian Games, she and veteran Achanta Sharath Kamal had bagged a bronze medal in the mixed doubles category for India.

The TTFI secretary Singh has also made it clear that the new head coach of the Indian team Dejan Papic from Canada will join coaching in July. The Indian paddlers continued to train without the guidance of a head coach after Massimo Costantini decided to leave India after the Asian Games in September last year.

"We have got the necessary approval from SAI, he should be here by July," said Singh.
