IND vs SA | Twitter relieved as Kohli’s bashing drive leaves Gaikwad on knees before missing him by whisker

The non-striker needs to be guarded not only from backing out too early from the crease, but also from the onslaught of the batter, and Ruturaj Gaikwad experienced that during the second ODI. The Indian batter survived a close shave after Virat Kohli’s full-blooded drive had him on his knees.

‌After a decent start, India lost openers Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal in the second ODI against South Africa inside 10 overs, with the score reading 62. However, Virat Kohli and Ruturaj Gaikwad reconstructed the Indian innings with a steady and assured stand of 195 runs for the third wicket.

Gaikwad had a charmed innings after being lucky not to be dismissed off a short ball first up from Marco Jansen. It appeared that the Chennai Super Kings captain had luck on his side as he also escaped the wrath of his veteran batting partner Kohli’s willow, too.

After surviving a full-blooded on-drive from Kohli earlier in the innings, Gaikwad was in the hot seat yet again in the first ball of the 34th over. With a juicy half volley from Corbin Bosch on middle and leg stump on offer, Kohli stepped out to whip it across the wicket with the ball flying towards the non-striker.

Gaikwas was caught off guard as he quickly went to his knees and tried to protect his face with his outstretched hands. But luckily, the Kookaburra whizzed past the Maharashtra batter for a boundary, as he breathed easy with a sheepish smile.

Just as he got on his feet, the former Indian skipper came with an apology and patted Gaikwad’s helmet as the partnership continued with fist bumps exchanged. Twitter was relieved as Gaikwad escaped unscathed by the barest of margins.
