AUS vs ENG | Twitter impressed as Neser’s maiden five-fer powers Australia to eight-wicket win in Brisbane

‌Michael Neser came up with an inspiring spell of pace bowling as Australia thumped England by eight wickets in the pink-ball Test in Brisbane on Sunday. The pacer, who came in to the side in place of Nathan Lyon, registered his maiden five-wicket haul in Tests to help the home side dismiss England for 241 in their second essay at the Gabba. The Aussies then chased down the target in just 10 overs to go 2-0 up in the five-match Ashes series.

Earlier, overnight batters Ben Stokes and Will Jacks batted out of their skin to help the visitors survive the entire first session without losing a wicket. Starting at 134/6, they put on 59 runs in the morning period in 24 overs to head for the tea break with a lead of 16 runs. They continued in the same vein in the second session to extend their seventh-wicket association to 96 runs in 221 balls before Jacks was dismissed against the run of play. Aussie skipper Steve Smith came up with a scintillating one-handed catch off Michael Neser’s bowling to pack off the all-rounder for a 92-ball 41. Though Stokes completed a steadfast half-century, he was visibly shaken with his partner’s dismissal, falling victim to Neser in the pacer’s next over. That ended England’s defiance, with the visitors getting bowled out under 250 and setting a modest total for the hosts to chase down. Neser, who picked up the last wicket of Brydon Carse, ended with impressive figures of 5/42.

The chase was just a formality for the Aussies with Smith and Jofra Archer having a go at each other to entertain a full house. The Aussie skipper hit two fours and a six in the pacer’s over to win the battle within a battle emphatically and ended unbeaten on 23 off nine balls, taking his side to 69/2. Pacer Mitchell Starc was adjudged the Player of the Match for his eight-wicket match haul and 77 runs with the bat in the first innings.
