Shubman Gill had various ups and downs in 2025 itself. He got promoted to captain in the Test and ODI formats, and even made his comeback to the T20I format as the vice captain of the team. Shortly after that, he was removed from the team for the T20 World Cup, missing another edition.

Shubman Gill will be missing out on the Indian team for the T20 World Cup 2026. As India entered being the defending champions, the team had a change in its vice captain. Gill made his comeback to the T20I format as the vice captain of the team, but he was not able to make his mark.

Eventually,. With a sudden change in the vice captaincy of the team, questions have started to rise on Gill's ability to lead India across all formats. On this, several former cricketers have also given their opinion, with England's Monty Panesar giving his views too.

1. Panesar on Gill as All Format Captain

Shubman Gill has seen a lot of changes in 2025 itself, as the year brought more responsibilities for the Indian batter. Till the Champions Trophy, he remained a player across all formats. But now, he has been shifted as the captain of the Indian team in the Test and ODI formats. This major shift happened after Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli retired from the Test format.

, Panesar said, “He is a complacent cricketer. He has a lot of talent, but he starts playing lazy shots in the game. Virat Kohli's intensity and aggression are evident in all formats. Shubman Gill can't do that. Too much burden for him. He can't be the captain of all formats. It is too much for him.”

Monty Panesar also said that , as they are missing him in the Tests. He said, “In white-ball format, you won't miss Virat Kohli that much. But yes, in Test Cricket, it's evident that Virat Kohli is not there, and the team's intensity is lower.”

2. Gill's T20I Comeback and Setback

for the Indian team. But he could not retain his spot in the T20 World Cup 2024. Despite being a part of the team as a reserve player, Gill was dropped as India went to the semi-final stages. Following this, he continued to be excluded from India's T20I side for many more months.

This continued till Gill saw his comeback and responsibilities increased for him. Just before the Asia Cup 2025, Shubman Gill was announced in the Indian team after a long time. But this was not just an ordinary comeback, he was announced as the vice captain of the Indian team in the T20I format.

Shubman Gill in Asia Cup 2025:

  • Innings: 7
  • Not Out: 1
  • Runs: 127
  • Average: 21.16
  • Strike Rate: 151.19
  • Best Score: 47

Unfortunately, his comeback didn't go as expected. He opened for the team in all innings with Abhishek Sharma. But not even a single time, he was able to bring up a big score for the Indian team. This had troubled the batsman to a great extent, noting the fact that he is the vice captain of the team.

Shubman Gill in T20Is in 2025:

  • Innings: 15
  • Not Out: 3
  • Runs: 291
  • Average: 24.25
  • Strike Rate: 137.26
  • Best Score: 47

His troubles continued even in the T20I series against Australia and South Africa. In the India tour of Australia, he was able to do well in a few games but they got affected by rain. But in the series against South Africa at home, he scored 36 runs in 4 matches, including a duck, and even missed on the fifth game.

3. Gill Eyes ODI Comeback

Shubman Gill is now setting his eyes to make a comeback in the ODI format. He suffered a neck injury in the Test series against South Africa. This also resulted in the Indian team going without their Test captain for the remainder of the series. Eventually, India did miss the availability of Gill, who was also the in 2025.

He spent a few days being admitted to the hospital and made sure to recover well. At the same time, the BCCI also announced its team for the T20 World Cup 2026 and the T20I series at home against New Zealand. For this, the team had surprisingly dropped from the line-up, citing his T20I form as the main reason.

And now, Shubman Gill has started his preparations for the ODI series against New Zealand. He did miss out on the ODIs against South Africa, but now seems ready to play for the Indian team in the series against New Zealand at home. Gill is also a part of Punjab team in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, but is yet to play a game.
