Shubman Gill could not make it count with the bat against South Africa on the second day of the first Test at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Saturday. The Indian captain pulled up his neck after playing a slog sweep as he had to walk back after facing just three balls during India’s first innings.

‌India started the second day of the first Test against South Africa on a cautious note with overnight batters KL Rahul and Washington Sundar adding just 25 runs in the first 10 overs of the day. The pair found the odd boundaries and added 57 runs for the second wicket as the home side slowly moved towards the Proteas’ total.

However, with the score reading 75, Sundar was dismissed by off-spinner Simon Harmer with Shubman Gill walking into the field to take guard. In an attempt to shake off proceedings, the Indian skipper played a slog sweep in just his third ball to collect his first boundary off Harmer.

But just as Gill tried to get back, his neck pulled up awkwardly as he walked to the pitchside, grimacing in pain. He tried removing the helmet and felt his neck with his arms as partner Rahul also walked towards him.

The physio was ready at the ropes and sprinted in and after attending to the Indian skipper felt it was better to walk off. Gill was still in pain as he walked uncomfortably, with the physio carrying his willow back, alongside. Twitter was on the edge as Gill was forced to stop his innings after a brief while with fans hoping to see him back at the earliest.
