India ended day one of the first Test against the West Indies in Ahmedabad at a strong position. The pace duo of Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah picked up seven wickets between them to bowl out the visitors for a modest total before KL Rahul led the home side’s reply with a patient half-century.

KL Rahul’s measured half-century led India to 121/2, 41 runs short of the West Indies, at the end of the first day’s play at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Thursday. The opener hit six fours and remained unbeaten on 53 off 114 balls after the pace duo of Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah picked up seven wickets between them to dismiss the visitors inside two sessions.

The visitors started shakily after captain Roston Chase opted to bat at the Narendra Modi Stadium losing both openers by the seventh over. Mohammed Siraj was fortunate to scalp Tagenarine Chanderpaul, who gloved a ball down the leg side to wicketkeeper Dhruv Jurel. Soon Jasprit Bumrah sent back the other opener John Campbell, with Jurel in action again. Siraj was once again the benefactor of a questionable decision, with Brandon King shouldering arms to an inswinging delivery that crashed into the middle stump. With Alick Athanaze also falling in the pacer’s next over, the visitors were struggling at 42/4. There was some resistance with captain Roston Chase joining hands with Shai Hope in a 48-run partnership. But Kuldeep Yadav was rewarded immediately after being introduced, going through Hope’s defence as early as his second over as India walked into lunch on a high.

The post-lunch session saw another valuable partnership between the all-rounder duo of Justin Greaves (32) and Khary Pierre after Chase became Siraj’s fourth dismissal. But Bumrah’s second spell ensured that the Windies tail did not wag long as they folded up for 162 with the umpires calling for an early tea. Siraj was the pick among the Indian bowlers with a spell of 4/40, while Bumrah had 3/42.

Though they started slowly, the Indian openers looked in complete control as they went about chasing the modest total. They were placed at 23/0 in the 13th over when rain briefly halted play. But Jaiswal shifted gears, flicking pacer Jayden Seales for a boundary in the second ball after the game resumed. He took Greaves for three fours in an over and hit another in Jomel Warrican’s next as the home side went past the 50-run mark. The aggression egged on to KL Rahul too, as he struck two fours of Seales’ next over, with Jaiswal looking set to go past his fifty. But the southpaw was dismissed against the run of play, as he edged to the wicketkeeper after trying to cut a delivery close to him. However, Rahul continued in the same vein to complete his half-century and ended the day in the company of captain Shubman Gill.
