Match Report

The R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo witnessed a commanding performance from Australia Women as they outclassed Sri Lanka Women by 110 runs in a group game of the Women’s ODI World Cup. Australia’s batting depth and spin firepower proved too much for the hosts, who showed flashes of resistance but were never truly in the contest.

Australia, after opting to bat first at R Premadasa Stadium, started briskly through Alyssa Healy and Phoebe Litchfield. Healy’s fluent 41 set the tone, while Phoebe Litchfield’s composed 63, which included seven fours and a six, anchored the first half. But once Litchfield departed, Sri Lanka briefly came back with Ellyse Perry and Beth Mooney trying to steady the Aussie innings. But things quickly changed when Ashleigh Gardner walked in. The centurion in the last game, once again top-scored with an aggressive 54-ball 72, a knock which included eight fours and two sixes. Her innings powered Australia to 291/6 in 50 overs, while Inoka Ranaweera (3/52) and Udeshika Prabodhani (2/60) were the pick among the hosts’ bowlers.

In reply, Sri Lanka needed Chamari Athapaththu to fire, and she did for a while, striking 47 from 53 with two clean sixes and six boundaries. Alongside Harshitha Samarawickrama, she stitched a 55-run stand that gave the island nation hope. But once Sophie Molineux dismissed Athapaththu with a turning ball, the chase unravelled. Australia’s spin battery of Molineux (3/33) and King (2/37) tightened the noose, while Sutherland chipped in with two wickets with her sharp seam bowling. Sri Lanka’s middle order struggled for fluency against the accuracy and discipline of Australia’s attack, and eventually folded out for 181.

Player of the Match

Ashleigh Gardner was named Player of the Match for her explosive 72 (54) in the middle overs that turned the innings and set a match-winning total.
