Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma might find it a bit challenging to maintain their spot till the 2027 World Cup. Amidst this, Ravichandran Ashwin talked about why they should be a part of domestic cricket till the World Cup.
The 2027 World Cup is expected to be the last mile for Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. But there have also been concerns over their selection for the last few months. The BCCI selectors have also introduced a Merit System for them if they perform well.
While uncertainty over their performances persists, Ravichandran Ashwin talked about the situation. Ashwin remarked on how important it is for both of them to play domestic tournaments. As they are available only for the ODI format, playing domestic could help them to maintain consistent performances for the team.
1. Will RoKo Play Domestic?
As the India tour of Australia looms closer, it will give fans a bigger image of whether they will see Rohit and Virat in the next World Cup or not. This will be their first appearance for the Indian team since the duo won the Champions Trophy 2025. Although they have been working hard in the nets, their form will be seen in the Australian tour.
The comments made by Ashwin were based on their contention for the 2027 World Cup. He said that both of them should be available for India A games and even present themselves in the domestic matches. Since they are only playing for the team in the ODIs, in the Vijay Hazare Trophy.
However, it all currently depends on their performances in the Australian tour. If the tour does not go well for the duo, the BCCI might ask them to play the Vijay Hazare Trophy. This also happened in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. As they failed to perform well, the BCCI also told them to perform in the Ranji Trophy.
The Vijay Hazare Trophy will commence on 24 December 2025. Since India would have completed its ODI series against Australia and South Africa, it will let Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma know where they stand. Moreover, if the duo plays in the domestic games, it will also be beneficial for the BCCI,
India's upcoming ODI series includes a three-match away series against Australia. After this, the team will be having a three-match series against South Africa in December 2025 and New Zealand in January 2026, which is scheduled to be played at home. Taking advantage of the home conditions, fans expect Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to come out on top.
2. Australian Stars to Play Domestic
While fans and cricket analysts want Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in the domestic, the Australian players have already started the same. The Australian team will be going against England in November for the Ashes. Their bowlers will play a crucial role, which they have started practicing from now onwards.
Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood will be playing in the Sheffield Shield. Both of them will be a part of the New South Wales team, going against Victoria. Even before the Ashes, they have confirmed their availability for the domestic tournaments, creating an example for the young talents.
Now, fans also urge Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to present themselves for the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Although there is a lot of time for the tournament to begin, they hope that the legendary duo will be able to prove themselves by playing in the domestic format.
