The BCCI has been criticised by several players and analysts lately for its selection criteria. And now, Indian politician Shashi Tharoor has also voiced his opinion on this matter. Tharoor backed Sarfaraz Khan and questioned why he had been snubbed from the Indian team.
The BCCI has been in the headlines over the last few months for its selection. Mainly in the Test format, it seems that the selectors are not looking forward to the players who are doing well in the domestic tournaments. This has eventually led to several exclusions from the Test team, including Sarfaraz Khan, who is among the most popular
Recently, Shashi Tharoor, an Indian politician, raised his concern about the exclusion of Sarfaraz Khan. But Tharoor is not the only one, as it was also questioned by several players and analysts. A few days earlier, Ajinkya Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara, the star Indian Test batsmen, also talked about the exclusion of Sarfaraz Khan being unfair lately.
1. Shashi Tharoor Lashes on BCCI Selectors
Shashi Tharoor has lashed out at the BCCI selectors lately. With the Ranji Trophy going on, several young talents have been able to prove their worth to the team. But still, they have not been able to receive a call-up to the line-up for unknown reasons. One such name also includes Sarfaraz Khan, who was a part of the team till the Test series against New Zealand.
He tweeted , “This is frankly an outrage. @SarfarazA_54 averages 65-plus in first class cricket, scored a 50 on Test debut and a 150 in a Test we lost, made 92 in his only tour match in England (and a century in the practice match against the full Indian Test team) -- and still finds himself excluded from the selectors' frame of reference.”
As India plays in the unofficial Tests against South Africa A, Sarfaraz Khan still remains excluded from the line-up. Despite having a great time with the Indian team, the series against New Zealand turned out to be his last. After that, he also performed well in the domestic tournaments, but has still not been selected to the line-up again.
, Shashi Tharoor talked about the other players also by saying, “I am also very glad to see @ajinkyarahane88, @PrithviShaw and @karun126 making runs in the #RanjiTrophy. Our selectors are too quick to discard proven talent in order to take a punt on "potential". These are players who have proven themselves over and over again. Runs in domestic cricket must be valued by the selectors, not just the #IPL; otherwise why should anyone bother to play the Ranji?”
2. Indian Batsmen in Ranji
The Ranji Trophy 2025/26 has been a lot better than ever before. With the competition increasing for the Indian team, every batsman is keen to give his best to the line-up to be selected. Sarfaraz Khan, who was excluded from the line-up, is yet to bring up a big score for his team, as he has scored just 75 runs in 3 innings.
Ajinkya Rahane, who was once a part of the Indian Test team, has been snubbed for almost two years. With his last Test match coming back in 2023, it can't be denied that he has not performed in the domestic games. In the match between Mumbai and Chhattisgarh, Rahane ended up scoring 159 runs for the team, which an upper hand in the game.
Karun Nair made his comeback to the game and was only able to play in the series against England. He looked great with the bat, but unfortunately, he was not able to convert his starts to big scores. Eventually, Nair was dropped from the Indian team despite giving his best across all the domestic tournaments
He has chosen to prove himself once again in the Ranji Trophy. In the team's first match against Saurashtra, he ended up scoring 73 runs in the first innings. This was followed by a magnificent 174-run knock, which he played in the game against Goa. Despite all these knocks, Nair by the BCCI selectors.
Prithvi Shaw is another name which can't be undermined by the fans. He was a part of the Indian team several years ago and was even termed as the next Sachin Tendulkar. But he is now keen to prove himself in the Ranji Trophy, struggling to make a comeback to the Indian Test team. He ended up scoring 222 runs in the match between Maharashtra and Chandigarh.
