Former India captain Sourav Ganguly received a death threat in the event of him attending a district felicitation function later this month. Kolkata police has asked Ganguly, who is president of Cricket Association of Bengal, not to attend the function in Midnapore on Jan 19.

Ganguly’s family confirmed that the ‘prince of kolkata’ received the threat in a letter from an unknown Zulfaqar Ali, who claimed to represent an All India Anti-Corruption Committee. The letter was addressed to Ganguly’s mother, Mrs. Nirupa Ganguly, his wife and his brother.

Zulfaqar Ali had also attached a photograph of Ganguly’s family taken at the launch of the Sourav Ganguly Foundation at a city hotel recently. Photographs of a dead man and a dead woman were also attached.

“I have intimated the whole matter to the police as well as the organizers of the programme there”

Ganguly told the Times of India.

Ganguly said that the letter warned him of grave consequences if he dared to visit the district.

“I have not decided yet and am waiting to hear from the authorities on this,” Ganguly said, when asked if would be attending the function.

This is not the first time that Ganguly has received a life threat. In 2008, Ganguly admitted that his family had received threat letters from Indian Mujahedeen and the Maoists on separate occasions.

Asish Chakraborty, a Trinamool MLA and a working committee member of CAB, said: “Sourav immediately called me up and told me about the letter which he received. I suggested him to take legal steps and requested him to send me a copy of the letter as well. I assured him of taking all necessary steps to find out what was the objective behind it.

“I am an MLA from Midnapore (W) district and have been associated with this association for the past four years. It is a deliberate ploy to malign both me and Sourav. I was planning to organise a programme with Sourav on Jan 19.”
