The hype for The Ashes is growing, as Australia has also announced its squad for the same. The team has been named for just the first Test, as fans await to see the action between the two greatest Test nations face each other from 21st November. Steven Smith will be leading Australia once again, in absence of their skipper,

To a major change, Australia has dropped their batsman Sam Konstas, who had been an opener for the team for the last few series. In his place, the team has announced Jake Weatherald to the line-up. The Tasmania batsman has finally received his maiden call up for the Australian team, following his performances in the Sheffield Shield.

1. Sam Konstas Gets Dropped

There were several questions in the Australian line-up, who would be opening for the team. Sam Konstas was also seen as a probable option, as he delivered well in the series against India. But he was not able to carry the momentum forward, due to which there were concerns related to his form. Konstas had to fight his form to get a place in the team.

Sam Konstas in Tests:

  • Innings: 10
  • Not Out: 0
  • Runs: 163
  • Average: 16.30
  • Strike Rate: 56.40
  • 100s: 0
  • 50s: 1

The Australian youngster, Sam Konstas, was only able to do well on his debut against India. He scored 60 runs off 65 balls in the first innings, which was followed by just 8 runs in the second innings. Along with that, he also didn't deliver consistently for the team, due to which he had to get back to the domestics

There also, he struggled to perform well. Even in the Sheffield Shield, he fell prey to Scott Boland a number of times, getting out on low scores. With his downward spiral continuing, there were other players who seized the opportunity and proved themselves to the team.

2. Debutants Called Up

Two new players have also received their maiden call ups for the Australian team. And what better occasion would it be than The Ashes, to make a debut for the team. These players include Jake Weatherald and Brendan Doggett. This improves both the batting and

Jake Weatherald, who plays for Tasmania, has impressed the selectors and finally made his place in the Australian team. He has been playing in the first class since 2016, and after 76 games, Weatherald will be getting his chance to play for the team. His performances in the current edition of Sheffield Shield have also been impressive, scoring three half-centuries in three games.

Jake Weatherald in First Class:

  • Innings: 143
  • Not Out: 3
  • Runs: 5269
  • Average: 37.63
  • Strike Rate: 56.92
  • 100s: 13
  • 50s: 26

Along with Jake Weatherald, the other name which has been added as a maiden call up is Brendan Doggett. The pacer has been highly rated across the domestic format, but was yet to get a call up from the Australian team. And now, he will be playing for the team directly in The Ashes.

Brendan Doggett in First Class:

  • Innings: 88
  • Overs: 1522.1
  • Maidens: NA
  • Wickets: 184
  • Average: 26.75
  • Strike Rate: 3.23
  • Four-wicket Hauls: 10
  • Five-wicket Hauls: 8

With a bowler and a batter making it fresh to the Australian team, fans are eager to see which one of them will be able to make it to the team. The Australian team lacks one pacer as Pat Cummins sits out of the first Test, and it also opens way for Brendan Doggett to make his debut.

3. Sean Abbott Returns

Sean Abbott will now be returning to the Australian side, as he makes his Test debut for the team. He has been named in the team for the first Test, and now fans await to see whether he will be a part of the team's playing XI in the game or not. It should be noted that Abbott has been great in the first class games, and also playing for Australia.

With his experience in the first class format being 89 games, it might help him to bring it to play against England. It is not like the England team is the only one bringing in the debutants or inexperienced players. Australia is also trying out their domestic stars, to see which one of them comes as a shocker to England.
