Ranji Trophy | Urvil Patel channels inner MS Dhoni to pull off clever stumping to dismiss Shahbaz Ahmed

Though Urvil Patel spent less than a month with CSK in IPL 2025, he seemed to have perfected the tricks of the trade behind the stumps from the master MS Dhoni. He displayed glimpses of that during Gujarat’s Ranji Trophy game against Bengal when he dismissed Shahbaz Ahmed with a clever stumping.

‌Bengal continued their perfect record in the Ranji Trophy with a huge 141-run win over Gujarat in an Elite Group C encounter at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Pacer Mohammed Shami and left-arm spinner Shahbaz Ahmed were the architects for the home side in their second round game, picking up eight and nine wickets, respectively, to restrict Gujarat in both innings.

Wicketkeeper-batter Urvil Patel tried to delay the inevitable, scoring an unbeaten ton in Gujarat’s second innings, but the hosts had the last laugh as they skittled the visitors out for 185 in their second innings on the final day of the battle. The Chennai Super Kings player was also impressive behind the stumps, effecting a clever stumping to account for Shahbaz in Bengal’s second essay.

The batter missed a straight delivery from left-arm spinner Siddharth Desai, while trying to punch a back of the length delivery outside off stump. An alert Urvil safely collected the ball and waited patiently before coming up with a flash of brilliance.

Just as the all-rounder tried to drag his back foot to return to his original batting position, the wicketkeeper slowly ticked off the bail before hesitantly appealing to the square leg umpire. Replays on the big screen shocked everyone in attendance, including Urvil, as the wicketkeeper showed perfect timing to clip the timber just as the foot went in the air before returning.

Twitter was in awe as Urvil showed glimpses of MS Dhoni to shock Shahbaz with his perfect glovework.
