Rohit and Kohli return to Indian colors for Australia white-ball tour as Gill takes over ODI captaincy

India men's chief selector Ajit Agarkar on Saturday announced squads for three ODIs and five T20Is in Australia, set to take place from October 19 to November 8. Several senior players have been rested or are missing with injury, paving the path for several fringe players to take their places.

India will have a 24-man contingent travel Down Under later this month for eight white ball games across three weks, with 15 available for three ODIs and 16 men in line for the second leg of the tour comprising five T20Is. Shubman Gill has been named skipper in the 50-over format in lieu of Rohit Sharma who led the team to the Champions Trophy title in the team's last ODI assignment earlier this year, marking his elevation to leadership status across all three formats having already been named Test skipper and T20I vice-captain. Shreyas Iyer has been named as Gill's deputy.

The ODI squad features five changes from the pack that won in UAE, with Hardik Pandya and Rishabh Pant missing out with injuries sustained in the Asia Cup and Test tour to England respectively. Jasprit Bumrah has been rested but is available for the shorter formats, while Varun Chakaravarthy and Ravindra Jadeja failed to find a spot given the lack of spin-friendly conditions Down Under. Nitish Kumar Reddy has been named as a like-for-like replacement for Pandya, having already made his Test debut in the country less than 12 months ago, while Dhruv Jurel has been preferred as the back-up wicket-keeper for the incumbent KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal the back-up opener. The pace contingent features Arshdeep Singh, Prasidh Krishna, Harshit Rana, and Mohammed Siraj, the latter making a comeback after impressive Test showings in recent times.

As for the more relevant shorter format, given the T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka is just four months away, there are just two changes -- the swap between Reddy and Pandya, and the addition of Washington Sundar as a spin bowling all-rounder to make it a squad of 16.

ODI squad: Shubman Gill (c), Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer (vc), Axar Patel, KL Rahul (wk), Nitish Kumar Reddy, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, Harshit Rana, Mohammed Siraj, Arshdeep Singh, Prasidh Krishna, Dhruv Jurel (wk), Yashasvi Jaiswal.

T20I squad: Suryakumar Yadav (c), Abhishek Sharma, Shubman Gill (vc), Tilak Varma, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Jitesh Sharma (wk), Varun Chakaravarthy, Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav, Harshit Rana, Sanju Samson (WK), Rinku Singh, Washington Sundar.
